Growing Communities: An Interview with one of our Market’s Longest-Serving Vendors

July 25, 2024 | Community Development, Economic Development & Workforce

Cedar Rapids Downtown Farmers Market

Can you believe the Cedar Rapids Downtown Farmers Market is 19 years old? Over the years, it has grown from a small gathering to a destination occasion, attracting a variety of vendors and record crowds. Before the 20th anniversary next year, we wanted to sit down with one of the people who have been pivotal in making it the special event it is today. We had the privilege of speaking with a vendor who has been there from the beginning to reflect on how the market has evolved since its inception.

To gain insight into the growth of our market, we interviewed Anne Ohrt, whose family owns Allen’s Orchard. The Ohrt family’s first business was Annie’s Apples and More, a bakery which debuted at the 2008 Market. In 2010, Anne’s family purchased Allen’s Orchard, then purely an orchard. Since 2010, they have married the apple farm and bakery together to bring even more apple-centric goodness to their patrons. Throughout their 16 years at the market, they have witnessed its significant expansion (and served millions of donuts).

Annie’s Apples and Allen’s Orchard have always been family endeavors. Anne and her husband lead the bakery end of the business, while her brother focuses on apple production. A surprising result of their participation in the market is that their family has grown, in a sense. Over the years, the family has formed close bonds with other vendors and regular visitors. During our conversation with Anne, she ran into a family whose children she used to teach during her career in education. These connections exemplify the sense of unity that the market cultivates, bringing people together who may not otherwise have the chance to interact.

Anne also observed that the number of vendors at the market has significantly increased since its founding. In 2008 there were about 25 vendor spots, whereas today there are more than 200. This development has led to a broader spectrum of products available for purchase. What began as a market primarily focused on produce has evolved into a platform for local artists, merchants, and food vendors to showcase their offerings. Moreover, the market now features art and cuisine from diverse cultures, reflecting the Cedar Rapids metro’s rich tapestry of backgrounds.

Much like our city, the market has faced numerous challenges over the years. It has shown resilience in overcoming adversity. Following Allen’s first market in Cedar Rapids, the Flood of 2008 struck the city. Despite the destructive impact of the flood, Allen’s Orchard returned to the market before the year ended. A decade later, the COVID-19 pandemic threatened traditional operations due to the need for social distancing and quarantine measures. In response, Allen’s Orchard joined other vendors in the Economic Alliance’s adaptation of a drive-thru-style market downtown to continue serving their products for that season. Anne expressed gratitude for the loyal patrons who came to her stall during a crisis unlike anything they had experienced before.

Looking ahead, Anne is optimistic about the market’s continued growth. With more businesses opening in the Cedar Rapids Metro, she expects more vendors to apply for the market. However, she stressed the importance of maintaining its high standards and vibrant atmosphere. Anne believes that the market’s consistency is vital to its distinctiveness. While the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance hopes to keep the Cedar Rapids Downtown Farmers Market growing and expanding, it is committed to thoroughly vetting vendors and entertainment to ensure the delivery of an incredible event for years to come.

We eagerly anticipate the future of the Cedar Rapids Downtown Farmers Market and hope to see you there. In the meantime, there are still three more market dates this season, along with Market After Dark! You can view upcoming market days and other events by visiting our events calendar.

Finally, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our presenting sponsor, Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust, for their steadfast support of the 2024 market. Their support has been instrumental in the remarkable growth of our market over time.
